The Rice University
Master of Liberal Studies Program
The Master of Liberal Studies degree program at Rice University provides a unique opportunity for adults in the Houston area who wish to challenge themselves intellectually at a world-class university. Designed for those who love to learn new ideas and discuss them with others, the MLS program allows students to explore timeless and timely human questions within the humanities, social sciences and sciences. It is for adults who have a curiosity about the world – about art, literature, science, politics, human nature and history. It is for people who want to explore new worlds and who enjoy meeting others who want to join the expedition.
Though exploring the liberal arts at a highly integrated level is not frequently possible in a career-focused undergraduate curriculum, it is both possible and well suited to a graduate-level program designed for adults. Courses in the MLS program will be taught by distinguished Rice faculty and invited visiting faculty who appreciate the opportunity to teach more experienced adults.
Who Should Apply?
At institutions nationwide, graduate-level liberal studies programs appeal to a broad audience. Professionals, even those who may already hold advanced or professional degrees, find that their liberal studies help them communicate more effectively, make better decisions and understand the broader context of their work. Others pursue advanced liberal studies for the sheer pleasure of learning – and to be a part of a learning community.
Since its inception in 2005, the Rice MLS program has attracted a wide spectrum of students. Medical doctors, attorneys, homemakers, recent college graduates, retirees, teachers, a range of business professionals and others have been accepted into the program. Such diversity – in age and profession – adds a level of broad-mindedness not typically found in the traditional classroom.
The program seeks committed, energetic adult students with bachelor’s degrees from an accredited college or university, who have significant life experiences and who are able to communicate effectively.
